Several European police forces participated in a Europol operation that managed to detect and remove from the Internet hundreds of manuals that gave instructions for the preparation and execution of terrorist attacks, the Spanish Government announced today.
Among the removed material are manuals for assembling weapons and drones, guides for making bombs and chemical weapons, instructions for selecting targets and choosing weapons and instructions on how to maintain anonymity and avoid being identified, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior indicated, in a statement. statement.
Police forces from Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Finland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom participated in this operation.
On December 18, Europol’s Internet Terrorist Content Notification Unit notified a dozen digital platforms of the existence of 872 Internet addresses that included manuals used by terrorists with different ideological motivations, such as ‘jihadists’, right-wing extremists and left or anarchist.
Another focus of Europol’s attention has been terrorist propaganda spread online by individuals, groups, networks and organizations that praised and celebrated terrorist attacks motivated by “jihadist” or far-right ideologies.
The elimination of this type of materials plays a fundamental role in preventing possible attacks around the world, highlighted the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, in its note.
The notification to the platforms was carried out through the PERCI platform, recently developed by Europol for the removal of illegal content in accordance with the different national legislations and the conditions of service of digital operators.
The experts participating in this operation verified that file sharing services are the preferred means of disseminating this type of content focused on the instruction and training of terrorists, although this type of material has been detected in different digital providers.
In addition to the police from the eight European countries, different Europol units specialized in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear substances and explosives participated in the control.
