Hundreds of people demonstrated on Saturday in Tel Aviv against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and demanded the immediate holding of elections, in the context of the conflict between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.
The protesters shouted, among other slogans, “elections now,” and many of them carried anti-government signs with messages against the actions of Netanyahu and his allies and also against the war in the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel newspaper reported.
Other banners called for soldiers to leave Gaza now or reach a “diplomatic agreement.” “Israel will not survive if we do not overthrow it,” said another sign by protesters, referring to Netanyahu.
Protesters also called for the release of hostages held in Gaza for 11 consecutive weeks.
Despite the protests, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the military offensive in the Gaza Strip will last “many more months.”
“My position is clear. We will continue fighting until Hamas is eliminated and all our hostages are freed,” Netanyahu said.
Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007, launched a series of attacks against Israeli territory on October 7, causing around 1,200 deaths and 240 hostages.
Israel declared war on Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by several countries, including Israel, the United States and the European Union.
More than 21,500 people were killed and 56,000 injured in the Gaza Strip.
