UN condemns new Russian attacks against civilians in kyiv and Kharkiv

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine condemned this Tuesday the new bombings by Russian forces on kyiv and Kharkiv and reminded Moscow that indiscriminate attacks against civilians are prohibited by international law.

“For the third day in a row, large-scale Russian airstrikes killed people, including children, and damaged homes and other civilian infrastructure,” Denise Brown said in a statement.

“The United Nations once again reminds Russia that indiscriminate attacks and shelling against civilians and civilian infrastructure are strictly prohibited by international humanitarian law,” he stressed.

Brown said this latest series of attacks also left many areas of the Ukrainian capital, kyiv, without electricity and water supplies, when temperatures are expected to reach minus 20 degrees Celsius this week.

“On behalf of the humanitarian community, I reaffirm once again our commitment to continue supporting the people of Ukraine, who are suffering from the destruction caused by the Russian invasion,” he said, adding: “My thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and the wounded.”

The Russian attacks were denounced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called them “a campaign of terror.”

“This year, we will continue to work with all people around the world who value life to strengthen our air shield and hold Russia accountable for everything it has done. The terrorist state must feel the repercussions of its actions,” Zelensky said, in a message published on social network X.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on international partners to accelerate arms shipments to Ukraine following increased Russian attacks.

The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine caused, according to the most recent UN data, the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by most of the international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing duties on Russia. political and economic. sanctions.
