Former South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on Friday, some 11 years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, prison authorities said.
Pistorius, 37, is “now at home”, on parole, having been “admitted to the community prison system”, South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services (DCS) added in a statement.
“We who are still here have been sentenced for life,” the victim’s mother, June Steenkamp, said in a written statement.
Pistorius served almost nine years of a 13-year, five-month prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend on February 14, 2013.
Parole was approved in November and the former athlete left Atteridgeville prison in Pretoria in the early hours of the morning.
In South Africa, serious offenders can be released on parole after serving at least half of their sentence.
