Are the British at risk of experiencing a power ‘blackout’ this winter? According to The Guardianthe BBC is now preparing emergency messages to be broadcast on FM and television in the event of a major power failure in part or all of Britain.
According to the main English Channel newspaper, such a blackout could cause failures in mobile networks, traffic lights and banking systems in England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland would not be affected by the crisis, as its electricity network is linked to that of Ireland.
Cuts in January and February?
The United Kingdom could face an electricity deficit equivalent to a sixth of “peak” demand, according to the worst forecast estimated by the Government in its planning. As part of an energy emergency plan, the British government has foreseen possible power cuts that would affect homes and industries next winter, in the worst case.
In this scenario, the strong need for electricity caused by the drop in temperatures would also be accompanied by a reduction in gas imports from Norway and electricity from France. This extreme situation would then force Britain to implement power cuts for a total of four days, Bloomberg said in August.
The Guardian For its part, it advances messages from the BBC alerting the population of a crisis that could last up to two days.
“The government has said it expects power to be restored within 36 to 48 hours. Different parts of Britain will start receiving intermittent supplies by then,” reads another message, the UK Daily reports.
This Monday, the British authorities tried to reassure the population, and warned that power cuts could occur between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on “really cold” weekdays.
