UK warns Putin of ‘serious consequences’ if nuclear weapons are used

Russian President Vladimir Putin will face “serious consequences” if he decides to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine. The message was given this Wednesday at 10 Downing Street.

“The use of nuclear weapons will have serious consequences,” said a spokeswoman for the British Prime Minister’s residence, Liz Truss.

“I think it would be a mistake to speculate on this issue rather than focus on what we see day by day, which is a senseless and barbaric attack on civilians all over Ukraine,” Downing Street added. This comes at a time when there are fears that the Russian president could use nuclear weapons in the Black Sea, according to The Guardian.

The UK’s warning comes when British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace is in Washington, where he has already met Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser.

Ben Wallace and Jake Sullivan stressed the need to continue providing security assistance to Ukraine as the country defends itself against “Russian aggression,” a White House statement said.

Liz Truss’s spokesman did not comment on Ben Wallace’s trip to the US, where he also met US Secretary of Defense Lloyd. J. Austin III. The meeting served to “confirm the US-UK defense relationship across a wide range of shared defense and security priorities, including Ukraine,” the White House said.

The meeting, which took place in Washington on Tuesday, between Wallace and “was a continuation” of NATO defense ministerial meetings held in Brussels last week.

They discussed “ongoing efforts to support Ukraine, including the provision of security assistance and the importance of transatlantic and regional security cooperation in light of Russia’s continued brutal attack on Ukraine,” the White House added. .
