Impressive images. The great dome of a mosque in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, collapsed after a fire, causing no casualties. Dramatic video shows a thick plume of gray smoke engulfing the dome as flames engulf the walls of the large mosque at the Islamic Center in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Workers forced to flee
Several workers who were working on the renovation of the building had come to watch the fire and fled when the crescent-shaped dome tilted and crashed to the ground. Police said there were no casualties.
“We discussed the possibility of going ahead with the renovation … and the most important thing is that we will soon be able to use the mosque,” Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono told Metro TV on Thursday.
The causes of the fire, which took hours to extinguish, are being investigated. Police said they suspected the fire may have started when construction workers tried to cut through the waterproof membranes. Four construction workers are being questioned, police said.
