The viral lettuce of the British tabloid “Daily Star” won this Thursday Liz Truss, after the British prime minister resigned after six weeks in a position marked by economic turbulence and political chaos.
For a week, the “Daily Star” broadcast live, 24 hours a day, on YouTube a video, in which a lettuce with a blonde wig and glasses appeared next to the conservative leader.
Alongside the video, created last Friday, the tabloid posed the question, “Can Liz Truss survive this lettuce?”
“Truss lost the competition,” declared the newspaper on Thursday, which viralized the image of the vegetable as a metaphor for Liz Truss’s ephemeral mandate, which goes down in history as the shortest in Downing Street.
The vice president of the Russian Security Council, former head of state, Dmitry Medvedev, also did not want to be left out and left a message on Twitter.
Goodbye Liz Truss. Congratulations to the lettuce”, wrote the Russian.
The ruler has only been in office for 45 days since she was appointed on September 6 by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
For most of her tenure, Liz Truss tried to repair the economic crisis, which devalued the pound, skyrocketed the cost of British debt and forced the Bank of England to intervene in an emergency to avoid bankruptcy of several Pension funds.
The paper’s joke came after an article in “The Economist” compared the prime minister’s time in office to that of a head of lettuce.
“Take away the 10 days of mourning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and she will have seven days in control. That is the life time of a lettuce”, read the text published last Tuesday.
On Twitter, the video was viewed by some 395,000 people in 24 hours.
