Shocking images. A tanker truck carrying fuel crashed into an overpass near a train track on Thursday, hitting a train and creating a huge fire in Aguascalientes, a city in central Mexico, Reuters reports. Photos and videos of the flames have been widely shared on social media.
The images show a burning train circulating through the Mexican city, releasing an impressive cloud of black smoke. In others, a fire affects railway tracks near apartment buildings.
Another video shows flames at the level of a bridge, while an explosion and sirens sound in the heart of the city.
The arrested driver
The circumstances of the accident remain uncertain at this time. The first information assures that a tanker truck collided with a train, but Reuters affirms this Friday that the vehicle crashed into an overpass.
The gouverneure de l’État d’Aguascalientes Tere Jiménez indicates on Twitter avoir “donné des instructions précises aux sociétés de sécurité de l’État et de protection civile” in order to guarantee the protection of “l’intégrité des citoyens et du patrimoine” of the city.
According to the local fire chief, the truck driver was also arrested by police, Reuters reports.
1500 people evacuated
The stunning incident caused no deaths, but some 1,500 people had to be evacuated, reports CNN Spanish this Friday.
Some 120 homes were affected by the fire and three people had to be taken to hospital for smoke poisoning, according to an interim report.
Rescue teams, the Mexican Army and the National Guard are present at the scene to carry out surveillance and clean-up operations.
