The UK has a new prime minister. Great favorite, the head of British diplomacy Liz Truss has just been chosen without surprises this Monday as head of the country and will officially succeed Boris Johnson on Tuesday.
The 47-year-old foreign minister won by a wide margin with 57% of the vote to former finance minister Rishi Sunak (43%) in the race for 10 Downing Street. She was elected by some 200,000 members of the Conservative Party.
Former Minister for Women and Equality and Secretary of State for the Environment, she becomes the fourth British prime minister since the Brexit referendum and the third woman to hold this position after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
An experienced conservative politician
Liz Truss replaces former London Mayor Boris Johnson. Craftsman of the Brexit, he announced his forthcoming resignation at the beginning of July, pushed for his departure by his own party.
A seasoned politician, the Conservative won over the base by promising massive tax cuts and taking a very hard line against unions. This has earned her comparison to Margaret Thatcher, an icon of conservatism, though her rival is at pains to dispute her legacy by posing as a champion of budgetary prudence.
A daunting task awaits you, while in the UK electricity bills are rising. An outbreak that is strangling homes, schools, hospitals and businesses.
The situation generates social conflicts like never before since the 1980s during which Margaret Thatcher was in power. Between carriers, couriers, longshoremen and lawyers, the strikes affect many sectors of the country.
A first speech scheduled for Tuesday
Queen Elizabeth II expects Boris Johnson to appear in Balmoral, Scotland, on Tuesday to officially tender his resignation. She will be followed by Liz Truss, who will become the 15th female head of government in the monarch’s 70-year reign.
He is then to make his first speech on the same day outside 10 Downing Street and then form his government.
This election marks the end of Boris Johnson’s mandate, first marked by Brexit and then precipitated by the Partygate scandal and various sexual adventures. Recently, he made headlines again by twice going on vacation in August, when the country was shaken by the crisis.
