The son of a Russian governor was arrested Monday at Milan’s Malpensa airport after a US warrant charged him and four other Russians with money laundering and sanctions evasion.
Artem Uss, the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Alexander Uss, is facing politically motivated charges, his father said in Telegram.
“The supply of petroleum products, public equipment and engineering vehicles, freely sold and purchased around the world, is suddenly declared illegal by US authorities”said the governor.
‘And why? Only because it was done for the good of Russia. The political connotations of these accusations are clear.”.
An appeals court in Milan confirmed the order on Thursday and set a date for Friday when Uss will tell the court whether or not he agrees to extradition.
If he objects to the order, it will take several weeks to complete the extradition process.
However, according to legal sources, his lawyers can request house arrest instead of jail time.
A lawyer, Vinicio Nardo, met with the USS in prison on Wednesday.
