“Hu Jintao was not feeling well.” The official explanation for the ex-leader’s withdrawal from China’s CP Congress

Former Chinese President Hu Jintao “felt unwell” as he was withdrawn from the closing ceremony of the Chinese Communist Party Congress on Saturday, state media reported.

“Xinhua news agency reporter Liu Jiawen learned that Hu Jintao insisted on attending the closing session, despite his slow recovery from his illness lately,” the Chinese news agency’s Twitter account read. “Since he was not feeling well during the session, his team accompanied him to a room next to the meeting place to rest due to his health. Now he is much better,” the journalist added.

China’s CP Congress was marked by the withdrawal of Hu Jintao, the predecessor of Xi Jinping who ruled the country between 2003 and 2013.

Hu, 79, was sitting prominently at the front table next to Xi Jinping when he was approached by two officials. The former president appeared to be arguing with one of the officials for a moment.

Hu eventually got up and talked to the two men for about 30 seconds, seemingly unwilling to leave. He was then escorted, with one of the officers holding his arm. Before leaving, Hu seemed to say something to Xi Jinping and tap Li Keqiang on the shoulder.
