The United States warned Russia “immediately” this Friday that there will be consequences if it uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
“We have communicated very clearly and directly to Russia that there will be consequences for any use of nuclear weapons,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said today.
Despite rising tensions between Washington and Moscow, Blinken assured senior US officials maintain open lines of communication with their counterparts in Russia.
“We made it very clear that when we have something important to communicate to the Russians, we will. And indeed, we do,” he explained.
The head of US diplomacy said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “comments” about the possible use of nuclear weapons were “the height of irresponsibility”.
“This is something that we are watching very closely and taking very seriously because of what Russia has done in Ukraine,” Blinken said.
Today, the Pentagon reported that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has urged his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu to keep lines of communication open as the war rages on in Ukraine.
