Iran says it released minors detained in anti-government protests

The Government of Iran said this Sunday that all minors detained during the protests that have occurred in the country since the death of Mahsa Amini have been released, despite complaints of repression against young people and children.

According to the Efe agency, which quotes the Iranian press, the Vice President of Women’s Affairs, Ensie Jazali, said that there are no “prisoners under 18 years of age”, since “all have been released”.

The official did not give details on the number of minors detained since the protests began, with the death of Amini, on September 16, after being arrested (three days earlier) by the ‘morality police’ for wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly.

The protests are mainly led by young people and women who chant “woman, freedom of life” and chant anti-government slogans, burning veils, one of the symbols of the Islamic Republic, in an act unthinkable until recently.

The treatment given to minors who participate in the protests has been harshly criticized by human rights groups.

Amnesty International (AI) recorded at least 23 children killed “with impunity in the brutal repression of youth protests” in September alone.

Among the 23 children killed was an 11-year-old boy who was shot to death, according to the organization.

The Government of Iran has reacted to the demonstrations with a strong police repression, which has already caused at least 108 deaths, according to the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights, based in Oslo (Norway).

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child said Iranian authorities “must end all violence” against children in the protests.
