On a trip to Italy, Emmanuel Macron met with the new Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, this Sunday night, a few hours after his government took office. He is the first foreign leader to speak to the new post-fascist head of state, who has headed Italy’s most right-wing government since the end of World War II.
At the end of this meeting, which took place in the center of Rome, Emmanuel Macron shared a photo on his Twitter account that shows him together with the Italian leader.
“As Europeans, in neighboring countries, as friendly peoples, with Italy we must continue all the work that has been started. To succeed together, with dialogue and ambition, we owe it to our youth and our peoples. Our first meeting in Rome, Giorgia Meloni, go in that direction,” said the president.
Received by the Pope on Monday morning
Just before this tweet, Emmanuel Macron had thanked outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi. “Grazie Mario”, he also wrote on Twitter along with a photo with the former ECB director.
On Monday morning, Emmanuel Macron will be received by Pope Francis in a private audience at the Vatican, the third meeting between the two men since 2017.
