New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of Britain’s “unwavering support” in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Downing Street said.
In his first appeal to a foreign leader in his new role, “Rishi Sunak spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tonight to underline the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine,” a Downing Street spokesman said in a press release.
Rishi Sunak also said that “he hopes that they (he and Zelensky) will meet in person soon,” he added.
Guest in Ukraine
For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky indicated in a video after the call that he expected a “strengthening” of his country’s relations with London, one of his main supports against Russia. He added that he invited Rishi Sunak to Ukraine.
Boris Johnson, British prime minister until last September, was particularly popular in Kyiv because of his strong support for Russia, and his resignation in July raised concerns.
Boris Johnson has visited Ukraine three times since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, the last time on August 24 on Independence Day, where he was awarded the Order of Freedom, the highest Ukrainian decoration can give to a foreigner.
Britain has provided strong military support to Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
