Russian ambassador to UK says Moscow ‘will not use nuclear weapons’ in Ukraine

There has been no statement, neither from the president nor from those responsible” on this issue, he insisted.

A reassuring statement. In an interview broadcast this Wednesday by the American channel CNN, the Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, insisted that aside from its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow did not intend to use nuclear weapons.

“Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu assured all ministers that we are not going to use nuclear weapons. There was no statement, neither from the president nor from the men in charge, I’m not talking about people on television, saying that Russia is going to use them, that’s out of the question,” he insisted.

Propaganda still at work

Since the beginning of the Russian “special military operation” in Ukraine, the Russian authorities have raised, sometimes half-heartedly, the threat of the use of nuclear weapons. The use of tactical nuclear weapons has also been mentioned.

This Wednesday, Vladimir Putin had shown muscles on this issue, supervising the training of his strategic deterrent forces, that is, the troops in charge of responding to threats even in the event of nuclear war.

In particular, a ballistic missile was fired at the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Russian Far East, and another from the waters of the Barents Sea, in the Arctic. The exercise also involved long-range Tu-95 aircraft.
