A man who killed six people after running over a crowd during a United States Christmas parade in November 2021 was found guilty of intentional homicide by a jury on Wednesday, following a trial in which he regularly disrupted hearings.
Judge Jennifer Dorow read the 76 charges filed against Darrell Brooks, 40, who kept his head down for a long time. The jury found him guilty on all counts: intentional homicide, assault on public safety, and hit-and-run in particular. In the state of Wisconsin, where the trial took place, intentional homicides are punishable by life in prison.
Darrell Brooks did not want a lawyer and represented himself. On several occasions he interrupted the trial and had disagreements with the judge, who then transferred him to another room.
six dead
Last year, he crashed his vehicle into crowds in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where an annual Christmas parade was taking place, shortly after becoming embroiled in a nearby domestic dispute.
Six people died, including a child. In his mad dash, Darrell Brooks had also hurt dozens.
“Burn in hell, asshole,” someone yelled in the hallway Wednesday before he was kicked out.
Darrell Brooks has a heavy criminal record. Notably, he was charged in 2020 with endangering others after shooting his nephew during an altercation.
The following year, he was prosecuted again for beating and attempting to run over the mother of his son. He was released a few days later on $1,000 bond.
