Will the Kremlin intervene in Iran? The United States believes Russia could advise Tehran on how to quell protests following the death of a young woman after she was arrested by vice squads.
“We are concerned that Moscow may advise Iran on how best to handle protests, based on Russia’s long history of repression,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.
“We’ll see what happens”
“We know that they might consider some form of support for Iran’s ability to suppress protesters,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.
“We are seeing signs that they might be considering it,” he added without elaborating. “We’ll see what happens,” she added. “But this is another example of the ongoing cooperation between Russia and Iran not only to violate the human rights and civil rights of Iranians, but also to threaten the lives of Ukrainians.”
The White House last week accused Iran of aiding the Russian military “on the ground” in Crimea.
“Our message to Iran is very clear: stop killing your people and stop sending weapons to Russia to kill Ukrainians,” said Karine Jean-Pierre.
Iran is shaken by an unprecedented popular protest for several years after the death on September 16 of a 22-year-old girl, Mahsa Amini, who died after her arrest by the morality police.
