The International Atomic Energy Agency announced Monday night that Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant continues to receive electricity despite the last reactor being disconnected from the grid.
“The standby power line was used to deliver power from the plant to the grid,” the IAEA said in a statement, explaining that cooling and other nuclear safety functions are still being carried out.
“The plant continues to receive the electricity it needs for its safety from its only operating reactor,” the agency attached to the UN also indicates.
Only two members of the IAEA remain on site in Zaporizhia on a permanent basis to observe the situation on site and provide independent assessments of the status of the plant.
Staff at the Ukrainian plant told IAEA experts on Monday that they planned to repair the broken line on Friday, but that it would take several days.
