Russian President Vladimir Putin did not congratulate new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on taking office because Britain is an “unfriendly” country, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.
“Britain is among the countries that fall into the hostile category, so there was no congratulations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
London very close to Kyiv
London is one of Ukraine’s main supports against Russia. Shortly after his appointment, Rishi Sunak spoke with Volodymyr Zelensky to assure him of the UK’s “unwavering support” in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
It was his first appeal to a foreign leader since taking office, Downing Street said.
For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky indicated in a video after the call that he expected a “strengthening” of his country’s relations with London, one of his main supports against Russia. He added that he invited Rishi Sunak to Ukraine.
