Mexico: marriage for all is now legal throughout the country

Marriage was already possible for same-sex couples in much of the country, except in the state of Tamaulipas, which was the last to criminalize it. It has just been legalized there.

Marriage for all is now legal throughout Mexico after it was adopted by the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, which was the last in the country to criminalize it, the local parliament announced on Wednesday.

The state of “Tamaulipas has approved reforms to article 132 of the State Civil Code, to recognize the right to marriage between people of the same sex,” the institution said in a statement.

“There is no first-class or second-class person, everyone should have that right,” said local deputy Nancy Ruiz, of the right-wing National Action Party (PAN), the origin of this initiative.

A law adopted in 7 states in 2022

Tamaulipas’ decision ends a 12-year journey since Mexico City, the country’s capital, paved the way for same-sex marriages in 2010.

The legalization of marriage for all in Mexico has accelerated this year, with seven states approving the union between two people of the same sex.

In five of the 32 states where this right has been established by court orders or executive orders issued by governors, it has not yet been harmonized at the legislative level, political scientist and LGBT activist Genaro Lozano explained on his Twitter account.

“But it is already a reality throughout Mexico. Thank you to all the activists and legislators who have supported him over the years,” he added.
