Russia announced Tuesday that the heads of European defense and armaments companies that supply weapons to Ukraine will be sanctioned in response to the European Union’s eighth package of sanctions against Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
“In response to the absolutely legal accession of Russia to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the Kherson and Zaporijia regions, the European Union adopted new restrictive measures on October 6 to prevent the development of our country”the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Moscow understands that these actions are “unilateral” and “illegitimate” as they undermine the international judicial powers of the UN Security Council, which enable the self-determination of peoples.
He also accuses Brussels of “ignoring for years” the discrimination and extermination of the Russian- and Russian-speaking population in the Russian-annexed Ukrainian regions.
Russian sanctions will also affect members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which passed an “anti-Russian” resolution in mid-October this year.
For all these reasons, Moscow has decided to expand the list of representatives of European Union (EU) member states that have been denied entry into Russian territory.
“We insist that any hostile action by Western countries in the future will be responded to in a timely and adequate manner”is in the released note.
The eighth package of sanctions includes a commitment to allow the transportation of Russian oil and its derivatives worldwide only if Moscow can sell it at or below the set price, in order to reduce its revenues that it can use to fund military campaigns in Ukraine.
The new round also bans European citizens from serving on the boards of directors of Russian public companies and introduces sanctions against Russian companies such as Alrosa, one of the world’s largest diamond producers.
