Moscow persists and signs. Russia has asked the UN Security Council to launch an international investigation into Washington’s involvement in the alleged development of biological weapons in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
“Russia had no choice but to submit a complaint to the president of the UN Security Council to request the initiation of an international investigation” into “the biological military activities of the United States on Ukrainian territory,” it says in a press release, specifying that this complaint was accompanied by an appropriate draft resolution.
Evidence?
Shortly after the start of its offensive in Ukraine in late February, Russia accused the United States of funding a biological weapons program in Ukraine, claiming to have found evidence to that effect in Ukrainian laboratories.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the goal of this research was “to create a mechanism for the stealthy spread of deadly pathogens.” Moscow has repeatedly made these accusations at UN Security Council meetings.
For their part, both the United States and Ukraine have denied the existence of laboratories intended to produce biological weapons in the country.
Russia had already accused the United States in 2018 of secretly carrying out biological experiments in a laboratory in Georgia, another former Soviet republic that, like Ukraine, aspires to join NATO and the EU.
For its part, Washington refuted, not through its ambassador to the UN, “a pure invention.”
“We all know that these claims are pure fabrication, presented without a shred of proof,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield. “But I must take this opportunity to make it clear: Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program… The United States does not have a biological weapons program.”
