“I ask everyone to prepare warm clothes for the house, warm blankets, because we do not rule out that the temperature in the houses is several degrees lower than normal.” In an interview with the local press, the mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko announced the color: due to the war, winter will be difficult for the inhabitants of the Ukrainian capital.
Lack of gas, risk of power outages… These threats make those who no longer have to endure the bombings as at the beginning of the Russian invasion fear the worst.
“I have electric heaters, but if there is no electricity, we will probably freeze,” testifies a woman living in Kyiv.
Wanted insulation materials
Neighbors forced to show foresight and creativity when the first frost approaches.
“I bought a 5,000-amp flashlight and an electric stove. If there is no gas, I can cook myself,” said another Ukrainian.
Products to protect against the cold are popular in the capital’s supermarkets. “What is most in demand today are insulating materials, window insulation, electric heaters, electric fireplaces and water heaters,” explains Marina Shelest, business director.
In a few months in Kyiv, it will be winter when average temperatures do not exceed 0°C and can even drop below -15°C. The inhabitants still have a few weeks before the great cold: for thirty years, the thermometer in December marked an average of -1.8°C.
