At least 13 dead in landslides and floods in the Philippines

At least 13 people have died as a result of landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Ten of the victims were from the town of Datu Blah Sinsuat on the island of Mindanao, regional government spokesman Naguib Sinarimbo told AFP.

Rescue teams found three more bodies in the nearby town of Datu Odin Sinsuat, it added.

“We hope this is the final count,” he said, adding that there are currently seven people missing.

Heavy rains began late Thursday, uprooting trees and causing massive flooding in the city of Cotabato (pop. 300,000).

The intensity of the rain is due in part to Tropical Storm Nalgae, the Manila weather service explained.

Nalgae is heading to the north of the Philippines, where civil protection elements have evacuated some 5,000 people, given the possibility of landslides and floods after the storm that is expected to hit this region over the weekend.

The Philippine authorities also indicated today that 88 people were injured in the earthquake that hit the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera regions on Tuesday.
