The EU decides to end vehicles with combustion engines by 2035

The European Union (EU) decided this Thursday to end vehicles with a combustion engine by 2035, thanks to the agreement between the European Parliament and the member states on this emblematic regulation for European climate objectives.

“Historic decision of the EU for the climate”, wrote on the social network Twitter the French MEP Pascal Canfin, of the Renew Europe group, president of the Environment Commission of the European Parliament, after a few hours of negotiations.

Commission Vice-President for the Environment, Frans Timmermans, welcomed an agreement that “sends a strong signal to industry and consumers: Europe has turned to emission-free mobility.”

The approved text, based on a Commission proposal from July 2021, foresees the reduction to zero of carbon dioxide emissions from new cars in Europe by 2035.

This actually corresponds to the de facto cessation of sales of new petrol or diesel vehicles and light utility vehicles in the EU on this date, as well as hybrids (fuel-electric), in favor of 100% electric vehicles.

Although the car, the main means of transport for Europeans, represents just under 5% of total carbon dioxide emissions in the EU, the new regulations should contribute to achieving the continent’s climate objectives, in particular carbon neutrality for 2050.

This was the first agreement on a European climate package text (“Fit 55”), aimed at reducing EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, with reference to 1990.
