Ottawa investigates existence of Chinese ‘police stations’ in Canada

The Canadian Federal Police revealed on Friday that they are investigating reports that China has set up police stations and put pressure on Chinese expatriates in Canada.

“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating information about criminal activity related to the so-called police stations. [chinesas ]”the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

In addition, Canadian police say they are “aware that foreign states may seek to intimidate or harm communities or individuals in Canada.”

The announcement follows an investigation in September by the human rights group Safeguard Defenders, which found there were 54 similar precincts around the world, including three in the greater Toronto area, Canada’s largest city. In Portugal, according to the same investigation, there are three of these police stations, without any case of repatriation being identified.

According to the NGO, based in Spain, some of these stations collaborate with the Chinese police to carry out “operations to maintain order on foreign soil.”

For his part, Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told the press conference that he regularly maintains that the information is “completely false”, and assured that Beijing “fully” respects the sovereignty of other countries.

It also specified that the people who work at these sites are “local volunteers” and “not [são] Chinese police”, and that they were “not” involved in any way in “any criminal investigation”.
