A desecrated place of memory. The Buchenwald camp memorial in central Germany was spray-painted with Nazi symbols on Thursday, including swastikas. The German authorities have announced that they have opened an investigation, announces the memorial. The place is considered a symbol of Nazi horror.
Nazi symbols were painted Thursday night on two road signs and a map installed inside the memorial grounds, local police said. All tags were promptly removed.
The memorial on Twitter deplored “an appalling attack on the dignity of Nazi victims and (their) work” and shared photos of the incident.

“Such actions show how important our work is,” officials at the memorial said, saying they refuse “to be intimidated.”
The place had already been vandalized several times. The last incident dates back to last July, when the trees planted in honor of the disappeared detainees were felled.
The Buchenwald camp is today considered a place of history and memory, a witness to the concentration system established by Nazi Germany during World War II.
During the conflict, it is estimated that the camp housed more than 280,000 detainees in total from all over Europe. 56,000 of them lost their lives there.
