US President Joe Biden, who has dropped out of the race for the White House, is expected to say in his solemn address to the nation on Wednesday evening, July 24, that he has withdrawn in the name of “defending democracy.”
“The defense of democracy is more important than any title,” he is due to say, according to excerpts of his speech published in X by a White House spokesman.
“I have decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. This is the best way to unify our nation,” he continued.
A president still in the job
“Over the next six months (…), I will continue to reduce costs for working families and grow our economy. I will continue to defend our individual liberties and civil rights,” he is still expected to say.
The Democratic president chose prime time, 8 p.m., to speak from the Oval Office about one of the biggest political upheavals in the country’s modern history.
After weeks of uncertainty, weakened by doubts about his mental acuity, the octogenarian announced a few days ago that he would not run for a second term, supporting his vice president Kamala Harris to represent the Democratic Party against Donald Trump.
