Pope asks for prayers for Halloween victims in Seoul

Pope Francis today addressed his prayers to the more than 150 fatalities, most of them young, who were registered on Saturday at the Halloween festivities in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

In the Angelus prayer, from Saint Peter’s Square, Francis asked the faithful to pray “for so many people, particularly young people, who died yesterday [sábado] at night, a tragic consequence” of the sudden overcrowding.

More than 150 people died in the crush that occurred during the Halloween festivities, with more than a hundred injured.

Authorities said people were crushed to death after a large crowd began moving into a narrow alley near the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon, a major party venue in Seoul.

Local media said some 100,000 people flocked to the streets of Itaewon for the Halloween festivities, which were the largest since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.

Among the fatalities are at least two Europeans.

The governments of Norway and Austria confirmed today that a Norwegian and an Austrian citizen lost their lives in the stampede.
