Lula da Silva is elected president of Brazil with 50.83% of the votes, according to data released by the Superior Electoral Court, while 1.14% of the polling stations have yet to be determined.
Lula da Silva, who has already served two terms between 2003 and 2011, returns to the Palácio da Alvorado after a second-round victory, for the first time in Brazil’s recent democratic history, over a head of state who was a re-candidate candidate.
The former trade unionist will have as vice president Geraldo Alckmin, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), who had already been his opponent in the 2006 presidential elections, then for the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
Lula da Silva has already reacted to the results on Twitter, writing only “democracy” with an image of the Brazilian flag.
