The death toll is likely to rise. At least nine people were killed and twenty-six injured on Friday, August 9, when a bus crashed into a bridge in ankaraaccording to an initial report from the governor of the Turkish capital.
The accident occurred at around 5pm in Turkey (4am in France) when a passenger coach from Eskisehir (centre) collided head-on with a bridge pile on a motorway as it approached Ankara, requiring the intervention of a large number of emergency vehicles and personnel, reported the public television channel TRT.
According to Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin, quoted by TRT, “there is no trace of braking at the scene, suggesting that the driver may have fallen asleep.”
Bus accidents are common in Turkey. In May, ten people were killed and forty injured in a collision between a bus, two cars and a truck on a motorway near Mersin (south).
