At least 98 dead in the Philippines due to storm Nalgae

At least 98 people were killed in landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in the southern Philippines, authorities said on Monday, the day Tropical Storm Nalgae moved away from the territory.

The previous official balance of the Philippine disaster management agency showed 48 dead, 33 injured and 14 missing.

Most of the victims were recorded on the southern island of Mindanao, an area that is rarely affected by typhoons and tropical storms.

Nalgae hit the main island of Luzon (north) overnight from Saturday to Sunday, causing power outages. In the capital, Manila, and in neighboring cities there were floods.

The Philippine Coast Guard has suspended navigation in much of the archipelago. Heavy rains began Thursday night in the region and bad weather forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 people.

On average, 20 typhoons and storms hit the Philippines each year. In late September, Typhoon Noru killed at least ten people across the country, including five members of rescue teams.

Tropical storm Megi, which hit the country in April, killed at least 148 people. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan caused the death or disappearance of more than 7,300 people.
