Russia fired dozens of missiles at Ukraine in the early hours of Monday, Ukrainian officials confirmed. Despite air defense systems, several electrical infrastructures in the capital, kyiv, were attacked, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power.
“An area of kyiv is without electricity and certain areas without water after the Russian attacks,” Vitali Klitschko, mayor of kyiv, wrote on the Telegram social network.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy also condemns another missile attack on the country. “Instead of fighting on the battlefield, Russia is fighting civilians,” says Dmytro Kuleba on Twitter. “Russia is doing this because it still has the missiles and the will to kill the Ukrainians,” he added.
“More than 50 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles were launched using Tu-95 and Tu-160 aircraft” from the North Caspian Sea and Russia’s Rostov region, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram. , quoted by the French agency. AFP.
The Ukrainian military said it had destroyed 44 of the Russian missiles, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.
This new wave of bombings follows Russia’s announcement on Saturday that it was suspending its participation in the agreement on grain exports from Ukrainian ports following a drone attack on the Russian army fleet stationed in the Sevastopol Bay, in annexed Crimea.
The deal, concluded in July under the auspices of the UN and Turkey, allowed for the export of several million tonnes of grain held up in Ukrainian ports since the Russian invasion in February, which has sent food prices skyrocketing, raising fears of hunger.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stepped up his criticism of the deal, saying exports from Russia, another major grain producer, were being hurt by the sanctions.
Crimea, annexed in March 2014 by Russia after an intervention by its special forces and a referendum denounced by kyiv and the West, serves as the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and as a rear logistics base for the Russian offensive in Ukraine.
