Russia accuses UK of ‘directing and coordinating’ sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines

Russia on Tuesday accused the United Kingdom of “coordinating” the September explosions that caused leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, built to transport Russian gas to Europe.

“Our intelligence services have indications that the attack was led and coordinated by British military experts,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said.

“There are indications that the UK is involved in sabotage, a terrorist attack on vital, not Russian, but international energy infrastructure,” Peskov added.

“Such actions cannot go unanswered. We will consider the measures to be taken,” he stressed, after condemning “the unacceptable silence of European capitals”.

Last Saturday, the Russian military accused the United Kingdom of being involved in the situation that led to the gas leaks in the Nord Stream infrastructure.

The charges came after a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Crimea. Russia has also credited “British experts” with the plan for this attack.

The British Defense in turn denounced Moscow’s “false statements” which, according to London, are intended to “divert attention”.

On September 26, four major leaks were discovered in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines off the Danish island of Bornholm, two in Sweden’s economic zone and two in Denmark’s economic zone.

Preliminary underwater inspections reinforced the suspicion of sabotage, as the leaks in the gas pipelines were preceded by explosions.

The Nord Stream gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany, have been at the center of geopolitical tensions for years, exacerbated by Moscow’s decision to cut supplies to Europe.
