War in Ukraine: Faced with power outages, Kyiv residents organize

Although power outages have been increasing for several weeks, the inhabitants of the Ukrainian capital have found several solutions to avoid spending the winter completely in the dark.

Nearly 4.5 million people in Ukraine were left without electricity overnight from Thursday to Friday due to Russian attacks on the country’s infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced an “energy terror.”

“Tonight alone, about 4.5 million consumers have been temporarily disconnected” in Kyiv and ten other regions of the country, Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening speech.

“Unprecedented” power outages are expected for “the next few days” in Kyiv and its region, due to the significant damage inflicted on the power system in Ukraine by recent Russian attacks, the Ukrainian private operator DTEK announced in late October.

To optimize the network, the authorities have decided to cut emergency. This is the case of Kyiv. As in many other cities in Ukraine, the city council of the capital has established a calendar of cuts that informs the inhabitants.

Emergency generators and spark plugs

And in Darya’s building, regular blackouts have forced this Ukrainian woman to rearrange her entire daily life. She uses the elevator to get out and back home, but also to cook the day’s meals: from now on, everything has to be planned in advance, she explains to BFMTV.

To avoid running out of power, other residents have found alternative solutions.

“We bought a cool gadget. A charging station where we can plug in any electrical device and thus we can cope with everything”, explains Mariana, mother of two small children.

When night falls and the electricity goes out, Ukrainians also resort to… candles. “Still, being in the 21st century without electricity… It’s a really strange situation. Especially when you have many things in your life that depend on electricity”, testifies Ola at the microphone of BFMTV.
