Iran: at least 10 dead in “terrorist attack” against police

The tragedy occurred this Saturday, October 26, in an area of tension in Sistan-Baluchistan, a region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.

At least ten people died this Saturday, October 26, in southeastern Iran during a “terrorist attack” that occurred in an area of tension in Sistan-Baluchistan, a region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Ten people died during a terrorist act committed in Taftan county against police cars,” announced the local agencies Mehr and Tasnim, without specifying the modus operandi of the attackers.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for this attack, which occurred about 1,200 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran.

Sistan-Baluchistan is one of the poorest regions in Iran. It is home to a large population of the Baloch ethnic minority, who practice Sunni Islam in contrast to the country’s predominant Shi’a branch.

Recurrent attacks in the area

In this region, there are recurring clashes between Iranian security forces, on the one hand, and rebels from the Baloch minority, radical Sunni groups and drug traffickers, on the other.

Already at the beginning of October, at least six people, including police officers, were killed in two separate attacks in this area.

The Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice” in Arabic), based in Pakistan and active in southeastern Iran, claimed responsibility for these two attacks on Telegram messages. Formed in 2012, the group has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent months in this area.
