A landscape of desolation. Deadly flash floods devastated southeastern Spain on Wednesday, October 30, causing panic in the Valencia region.
Léa Jamardo, a French woman who was driving from Barcelona, found herself stranded on a bridge and watched helplessly as the waters rose. Trapped for more than 20 hours, she explains on BFMTV how she escaped the worst.
“We were on the road, we wanted to get out because it was blocked and we got stuck on a bridge. We were very lucky because the cars were swept away by the water, the trucks were submerged,” he says.
“We saw them sink”
“There was a lady who was trapped in her tree in the middle of the water for seven hours. There was a torrent so strong that we couldn’t do anything. We saw cars driving with people inside asking for help, we saw them.” sink,” describes the young woman.
“It’s a disaster,” he says, while waiting for help to arrive. “There are homeless people around us, people who have lost family members. There is no food, no emergency services coming to see us, nothing at all.”
At least 51 people died in the floods, according to an interim report. The region is virtually isolated from the rest of the country and some villages are inaccessible, emergency services said.
