Morocco: a cold drop causes snowfall in the Middle Atlas

Images captured on Tuesday, October 29, show a thin layer of snow in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The result of a cold drop according to meteorologist Guillaume Séchet.

The Michlifen resort in Morocco’s Middle Atlas was covered in snow for the first time this season on Tuesday, October 29. Videos shared on social networks show that the first flakes fell from 1,500 meters on these peaks.

As meteorologist Guillaume Séchet explains, these snowfalls are related to the phenomenon that caused the bad weather in Spain. “The cold drop brings bad weather to Spain but also to Morocco, where snow falls from 1,500 meters in the Middle Atlas!”

A cold drop is a mass of cold air located at altitude that can cause heavy precipitation, in the form of rain or snow. “If we are facing a cold drop, the summer weather becomes heavy and stormy. At the rear, it gives way to cooler, even autumnal weather,” explained BFMTV in June 2020.com François Jobard, Météo meteorologist. -France.

Satellite images also show the Middle and High Atlas covered by a white sheet:

As X Maroc Millénaire’s story points out, snowfall also fell in Oukaïmen, the “highest ski resort in Africa”, 80 km from Marrakech. A resort open from December to March, which culminates at 2,620 meters above sea level.
