The 26-year-old soldier died from his injuries after a traffic accident when he was “returning from a shooting exercise,” explains the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Vasil Bychyk had just been sent to Djibouti a few days ago and would remain there until February 2025, “as part of a short-term mission,” explains the ministry.
1,500 French deployed in Djibouti
Single and childless, he was promoted to the rank of corporal in April 2024, following a deployment to Romania as part of Operation Eagle. Vasil Bychyk also “holds the bronze medal for national defense and the medal for military protection of the territory,” the ministry states.
“My thoughts and the support of the army to his wounded brothers in arms, to his family, to his loved ones and to his comrades of the 16th battalion of foot hunters,” reacted the chief of staff of the Terre army Pierre Schill .
Around 1,500 military and civilians make up the French forces in Djibouti. A presence framed in a cooperation treaty signed in December 2011.
