The Ukrainian parliament canceled its session scheduled for Friday, November 22, due to an increased risk of a Russian attack, the day after the launch of a new ballistic missile from Moscow, several deputies indicated.
The ordinary session in which government officials participated “has been cancelled,” presidential party deputy Yevgenia Kravtchouk told AFP, confirming information from other elected officials. “There are signs of an increased risk of attacks on the government district in the coming days,” he added.
The Government Quarter is located in the center of kyiv and houses the Parliament, the Presidency, the Government House and the Central Bank, all within walking distance, as well as many residential buildings.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, access to this area has been closed to the public and you have to go through military checkpoints to access it.
“Missile threat”
“The government quarter has always been one of the most precious targets” of the Russian army, said Yevgenia Kravchuk.
Parliament staff “are also working remotely” on Friday, he said. An employee who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed to AFP that “everyone” was teleworking on Friday.
Another deputy, Oleksiï Goncharenko, spoke of “a missile threat” on Telegram and criticized the cancellation of the parliamentary session as “absolutely ridiculous.”
“They created even more panic. In fact, they played into (Vladimir, editor’s note) Putin’s hands. What a circus,” he protested.
Presidential spokesman Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, assured that the presidential administration was “working as usual, respecting usual security standards.”
