Israel-Hezbollah war: at least four dead in new attacks in the heart of Beirut

The attack damaged several nearby buildings and several ambulances responded to the site of a building in the Basta district.

New hours of terror in Beirut. Multiple attacks hit the Lebanese capital overnight from Friday, November 22 to Saturday, November 23, including a series at dawn that completely destroyed a residential building in the heart of the city, as the open war between Israel and Hezbollah enters its third month.

Rescuers worked Saturday morning to remove the debris with excavators, according to AFPTV images. Local authorities report at least four deaths.

“The capital, Beirut, woke up to a terrifying massacre: Israeli planes completely destroyed an eight-story residential building with five missiles on Maamoun Street in the Basta neighborhood,” the Ani national information agency said.

AFP journalists in and around Beirut heard at least three loud explosions, followed by a pungent smell, after a day of intense shelling in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of pro-Iran Hezbollah, in open war against Israel.

Several ambulances

The attack damaged several nearby buildings and several ambulances rushed to the site of the attacked building, which turned into a pile of rubble, in this popular and densely populated district of Basta.

During a speech on Wednesday, Hezbollah leader Naïm Qassem warned that his movement would attack “the center of Tel Aviv,” Israel, in response to recent Israeli attacks in Beirut.

Early on Friday, as well as during the night from Friday to Saturday, Ani had already reported a series of Israeli attacks against the southern suburbs of the capital.

Several buildings were attacked, including two located on the outskirts of Beirut’s southern suburbs, in the still densely populated Chiyah sector of Ghobeiry, which is home to several shopping malls, again after calls to evacuate.

These attacks come as the WHO declared on Friday that almost 230 health workers had been killed in Lebanon since October 7, 2023, deploring “an extremely worrying figure.”

The Israeli military said it had “carried out a series of attacks against Hezbollah terrorist command centers” in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

It added that it had attacked “Hezbollah terrorist targets in the Tire region” (southern), including “command centers” and “weapons storage facilities.”

For the first time on Friday, Israeli troops entered the village of Deir Mimas, about 2.5 kilometers from the border.
