A Russian businessman close to the Kremlin, Yevgeny Prigojine, admitted on Monday that Russia has interfered in US electoral processes, on the eve of the US mid-term elections.
“We interfere. We interfere and we will continue to do so. Carefully, precisely, surgically, in our own unique way,” Prigojine confessed, in a message posted on his company’s social network.
The remarks came in response to a question about allegations of Russian interference in Tuesday’s midterm elections in the United States, which are being closely watched by Moscow.
Indeed, US intelligence agencies such as the FBI and NSA have recently exposed concerted actions between Russian and Iranian hackers to interfere in the midterm elections.
Prigojine, which is subject to US and European sanctions, has been accused of interfering in US elections for several years, most notably the 2016 presidential election, which saw former Republican President Donald Trump win.
Prigojine is accused of having created a large number of fake profiles that operate on social networks in an attempt to influence voters, for example by denigrating candidates or spreading false information.
The businessman has progressively asserted himself as a public figure in Russia, multiplying appearances in support of Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine.
At the end of September, Prigojine admitted having founded the Wagner paramilitary group in 2014, which is now fighting in Ukraine, admitting its presence in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
Known to be very close to Vladimir Putin, Prigokhine was for a time one of the purveyors of the Kremlin’s kitchens, earning him the nickname “Putin’s cook”.
