The Venezuelan Minister of the Interior denied this Monday, November 25, that the police are harassing the Argentine embassy in Caracas where six opponents are taking refuge, after the government of Javier Milei denounced “harassment” against the diplomatic mission.
“Javier Milei is the fascist who governs Argentina (…). I don’t know what he calls ‘harassing’ someone in his embassy, I don’t know, I really don’t know what he is doing to us.” accuses now,” said Diosdado Cabello at the weekly press conference of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), the ruling party.
Six collaborators of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado took refuge in the embassy in March, including her campaign director Magalli Meda.
Tensions between Buenos Aires and Caracas
On Saturday, the Argentine Foreign Ministry denounced “acts of harassment and intimidation” against its embassy and demanded that Venezuela issue “the necessary safe conduct” so that opponents who are in residence can leave the country.
“The deployment of armed troops, the closure of streets around our embassy and other maneuvers constitute an alteration of security,” stressed the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release, which also denounced power cuts.
“Whether they pay for electricity, whether they pay for services, we are not going to give them anything for free,” Diosdado Cabello joked.
Brazil announced in August that it was taking charge (with authorization from Caracas) of the Argentine diplomatic delegation after the breakdown of diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela.
Caracas had broken relations with six countries, including Argentina, that had questioned the results of the July presidential elections, won by outgoing president Nicolás Maduro, according to the National Electoral Council, considered under the orders of power.
A month later, after diplomatic tensions also due to the vote, Caracas canceled the authorization granted to Brazil. The opposition, which alleges fraud, claims victory in the presidential elections.
