Greenland responds. Prime Minister Múte B. Egede responded on Friday, January 10, to comments by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who threatened to annex the territory, located in the Arctic.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders. We don’t want to be Danes, we don’t want to be Americans, we want to be Greenlanders,” the Prime Minister proclaimed in a press conference with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen, CBS News reports in particular.
Although he is due to assume the presidency on January 20, Donald Trump sparked disbelief on Tuesday, January 7 in Denmark by refusing to rule out the use of force to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, which also threatens Panama.
“Interrogations in Greenland and Denmark”
Prime Minister Múte B. Egede clarified that he had not yet spoken to Donald Trump about this matter, but said he was open to conversations with the president-elect about “what unites them.”
The head of the Danish Government, for her part, highlighted “the numerous issues” that the American’s statements raise “in Greenland and Denmark.”
“The debate on Greenland’s independence and the latest announcements from the United States show us the great interest in Greenland,” said Mette Frederiksen.
“The United States is our closest ally and we will do everything possible to continue this strong cooperation,” he later assured.
Denmark “does not believe” in an annexation of Greenland
On Thursday, the Danish Prime Minister approached Donald Trump and asked for dialogue. He also assured that he did not believe that the future occupant of the White House would try to take over Greenland by force.
“We have no reason to believe this is going to happen,” he argued.
The Greenlandic Prime Minister, for his part, has on several occasions supported the independence of his territory placed under the sovereignty of Denmark. “Cooperation is based on dialogue. Cooperation means working to find solutions,” the Prime Minister stressed.
At the end of 2024, the president-elect had reiterated his expansionist objectives by ensuring that control of Greenland was “an absolute necessity” for “the national security” of the United States and “freedom throughout the world.”
