The United States on Friday announced a new tranche of military aid to Ukraine, including additional missiles for Kyiv’s air defense, worth a total of about $400 million.
Given Russia’s “relentless and brutal airstrikes against Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure, additional air defense capabilities are paramount,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters in announcing the new aid.
Almost 20 billion since February
This new tranche also helps missiles for old-generation Hawk systems that Spain has agreed to deliver to Kyiv, as well as projectiles, missiles for Himars precision artillery systems and various ammunition.
This new tranche of aid brings US military aid to Ukraine to more than 18.6 billion dollars since the start of the Russian offensive on February 24.
US Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley estimated on Wednesday that more than 100,000 Russian servicemen had been killed or wounded since the start of the Ukraine invasion, adding that the casualties were likely of the same Ukrainian order.
The highest-ranking American was also hoping for talks to end the war, as a military victory was not possible for either Russia or Ukraine, he said.
Russia has announced that it has ordered its troops to withdraw from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, a major blow to Moscow’s military campaign. “We see some signs of withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson, but it is too early to know exactly… what this means,” the spokeswoman said.
