“Exceptional circumstances”: Spain will regularize the victims of migrants from the floods of October

The Spanish authorities announced on Tuesday the regularization of people in an irregular situation that were affected by floods in the Valencia region last October.

The Spanish Government announced on Tuesday, February 11, the regularization of migrants in an irregular situation affected by the floods that left 232 dead on October 29 in the Valence region, confronted for some with situations of “extreme vulnerability.”

This system, adopted in the Council of Ministers, is part of a package of measures aimed at “guaranteeing legal certainty” of foreigners living in municipalities affected by flooding, but also of their possible employers, according to the Ministry of Inclusion and Migration .

It will allow undocumented people who lived in these municipalities at the time of tragedy to benefit from “residence permits for exceptional circumstances” for a period of one year, which will authorize them to “reside and work in Spain,” he specifies.

25,000 people will benefit from this measure

Residence permits will also be taken to five years for relatives of foreign people who died during bad weather. When these residence permits are deciduous, beneficiaries may request a renewal of the administration according to the classic route.

According to the Ministry, the package of measures adopted on Tuesday also provides the automatic renewal of residence permits for foreigners in the affected areas that will request it. Rejection is specified only for “public and security” reasons, it is specified.

According to the Ministry, these measures will benefit 25,000 people in total. These ads were remarkably applauded by the Reconstruction Manager in the Valencia Region, General Francisco José Gan Pampols, who recalled that the companies present in the affected areas lacked labor.

“If these people can carry out one of the numerous necessary works in the region, they are more than welcome,” said the retired soldier, appointed vice president of mid -November of the Government of Valencia for economic and social recovery.

They were also welcomed by the Ouvrières Syndendat (CCOO), for whom “these exceptional mechanisms will allow migrants to access equal conditions” with the rest of the population “to help” proposed by the State to the floods of the victims.

On the reverse of most of its European counterparts, the socialist prime minister Pedro Sánchez has advocated for several years a positive approach to immigration, considered necessary against the aging of the Spanish population.

This approach has led the Executive to adopt in mid -November a new regulation aimed at facilitating the regularization of tens of thousands of immigrants in the next three years.
