“It’s a historic day!” The people of Kherson celebrate the arrival of Ukrainian forces

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that his country lives “a historic day” after the recapture of the city of Kherson, where the Ukrainian special forces will already be, from the Russian forces.

“Today is a historic day!” Zelensky proclaimed in a message posted on social media.

“Our people. It is ours. Kherson”, the Ukrainian leader began writing, in a brief message on Telegram, before expanding his satisfaction in a new message where he congratulated himself on the reconquest of the region hitherto occupied by the forces commanded by Moscow .

This afternoon, the Ukrainian army announced that it had “entered” Kherson in southern Ukraine, and the Defense Ministry called on Russian soldiers to “surrender immediately.”

Volodymyr Zelensky clarified that the Ukrainian army “is indeed on the outskirts of the city”, but clarifying that several “special units are already inside”.

The Ukrainian president also praised the courage of the Khersonians, who have been under Russian occupation since mid-March.

“They never left Ukraine,” Zelensky concluded.

The people of Kherson are in the streets celebrating the arrival of the Ukrainian forces and the recapture of the city. In kyiv, people also celebrate.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which catalogs this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,490 civilian deaths and 9,972 wounded, stressing that these figures are far below the real ones.
