Russia sanctions Joe Biden’s siblings, White House spokeswoman

Russia added 200 US citizens to its blacklist on Friday, including US President Joe Biden’s brothers, several government officials and White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre.

Moscow’s update of the blacklist comes in response to sanctions taken by Washington that have hit Russian officials, businessmen and cultural figures, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Among the Americans targeted by sanctions are Valeri, the sister of the US president, and her younger brothers Francis and James.

The list also included Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, Secretary of Health, Xavier Becerra, and Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, and Education, Miguel Cardona.

In addition, the list also includes senior officials, parliamentarians and their close relatives, as well as directors of companies in the defense sector and industry experts.

Also noteworthy is the presence of journalist and writer Anne Applebaum, who received the Pulitzer Prize (2004) for her book on the Soviet ‘gulag’, the forced labor camps of the USSR, and who also published another work on hunger in Ukraine caused by the forced collectivization of land by order of Stalin.

Moscow accuses all sanctioned of taking part in a Russophobia campaign and supporting what they consider to be the Kiev regime, in an allusion to the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In May, the Russian State Department imposed sanctions on Biden and nearly 1,000 American citizens, in response to sanctions Washington passed on the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.

In September, Moscow expanded its blacklist of US citizens banned from entering the country to include actors Sean Penn and Ben Stiller, as well as 23 other US citizens, in addition to several secretaries, undersecretaries and businessmen.

The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24 has already led to the flight of more than 13 million people — more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries — according to the latest data of the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented 6,490 civilian deaths and 9,972 wounded as confirmed since the start of the war, underlining that these numbers are far below the actual ones.
